What’s up Murka Nation?! Welcome to the Own Roads series. Own Roads’ is about people calling their own shots and crafting their own dynamic career path, braving the non-familiar and absolutely dominating in whatever field they end up in. Over the coming months, we are going to be interviewing people that we think are a true inspiration and role models to people around them.
This week we are featuring Olly Coddington – actor/editor/producer in New Zealand and we delve into his life and how he is currently murkin’ it!
OWN ROADS #01 – Interview with Olly Coddington
Olly! What is up?! In a few sentences, describe who you are and what you do to the Murka Nation!
Kia ora koutou, My name is Oliver Tukino Coddington but everyone just calls me Olly. I’m a surfer from Raglan who works in the NZ television industry.
Who were you biggest influences growing up?
My first big influences growing up were my Mum and Dad, my sisters, my Nan Koro and my cousins. But outside of family, there were some Raglan legends like GC (Glen Campbell), KT (Ken Thomas) and CB (Chris Banks) who were my Dad’s best friends and were all local surf lords. Then as I got older it was guys closer to my age like DK (Daniel Kereopa) …How’s we just acronym everyone ay lol – Marc Moore, Emerson Tucker, Scotty McNab.. Those guys were some of the best surfers in the country and to be hanging with them and going surfing with them when I was a cheeky lil’ grom meant the world to me
What benefits did it have on you growing up in a rad surf town like Raglan?
Growing up in a small surf town like Raglan was awesome. There was and is a strong sense of community, no malls.. Just hang at the beach and surf and skate and laugh with the boys every day… There wasn’t many chicks my age growing up though haha
On the topic of surfing’ Whats the heaviest wipeout, you’ve ever had?
The heaviest wipeout I’ve ever had was actually this year at Desert Point in Lombok, Indonesia. I took off on a solid one and felt too deep but two guys were down the line hooting me so I did the stand up Hayne Plane wings out to me sides, got a massive barrel but did not come close to coming out. Instead fell heavily and got sucked over and slammed into the reef pretty hard. Lucky I was wearing a vest, even with it on I still got grazed all over my back and arm and tonked my head pretty hard on some reef too – lucky a softer bit. That was the end of that surf
So where about are you based and what are ya up to?
These days I live in Auckland, NZ and work in the TV industry. I’ve been at it on and off for over 12 years now. I’m currently the producer of Game Of Bros, which is a ‘Survivor’ style reality game show on Māori Television. I’m also a line producer for Fresh, which is a magazine style entertainment show for young people on TVNZ 2. I basically ring and email heaps of people and organise stuff, but I get involved with heaps of the creative stuff as well and love being there on shoot days. My job can be heaps of fun.
When & what made you decide you wanted to be on TV?
I always loved movies and cartoons and stories basically.. Even at school I really enjoyed film studies, drama, kapahaka.. Storytelling stuff. So after 2 years of washing dishes and working in surf shops after I finished school, I decided I was going to work in the entertainment industry. Long story short – I put myself out there and took every opportunity that came my way and got my first full time TV job in 2005 at Māori Television. It was low level behind the scenes stuff, but after a year I weaseled my way in front of the camera at another station: TV2. I hosted a couple youth TV shows there for 4 years.. And I’ve been working on and off in the industry ever since.. Mainly behind the scenes these days though
What next on the agenda for you?
My goal is to create my own show.. I’ve always wanted to make a cool surfing show.. Something that has surf and travel…. Basically, I just want to get paid to surf and travel. An even bigger dream of mine is to write/direct/produce a comedy film.. Like a funny rom-com. Funny movies are a gift to humanity. If I could pull that off, that would be awesome. But other than any career goals, I mainly just wanna eat good food with my loved ones, be healthy and surf heaps of good waves.
